The
Center for Molecular and
Behavioral Neuroscience (CMBN) is an inter institutional research center
whose goal is to promote and facilitate neuroscience research in Puerto Rico
and the Caribbean. The CMBN is based at the Universidad Central del Caribe
Medical School (UCC) at Bayamón. It nucleates thirteen neuroscientists from
three Puerto Rican Universities: UCC, University of Puerto Rico Medical
Sciences Campus and Río Piedras Campus, and Ponce School of Medicine. It
funded by the Research Centers In Minority Institutions (RCMI)
programs from NIH: RCRR, SNRP, and SCORE. |

ABOUT CMBN
The UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DEL CARIBE (UCC)
is an LCME-accredited private medical school located in the city of Bayamón,
Puerto Rico. Neuroscience was the first scientific discipline practiced at
UCC from its very beginnings in 1976. With time, it became a definite
strength in the research arena. The Neuroscience area was approved for
funding in 1986-1991 by the NIH-RCMI Program. The success of this area
stimulated the participating scientists to create a research center to
promote and facilitate neuroscience and provide it with much needed
visibility to attract graduate students and new faculty to this field. Thus,
the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience (CMBN) was created in
1991.

CMBN GOALS |
 |
To facilitate improved access to
modern methodologies.
To provide an administrative structure supportive of research activities. |
 |
To create an intellectually stimulating environment for neuroscience
research. |
 |
To foster interdisciplinary collaboration among its members and with leading
laboratories in this field.

ORGANIZATION AND
ACTIVITIES:
The CMBN is composed of sixteen doctoral
level scientists and ten students members. They are based at UCC, University
of Puerto Rico Medical School and Río Piedras Campus, and Ponce School of
Medicine. All CMBN scientists and advisors meet yearly at a location outside
the San Juan/Bayamón area to discuss the ongoing research and plan the next
year activities. Previous retreats were held in Palmas del Mar Resort,
Humacao, Costa Dorada Resort, Isabela, and Copamarina Resort, Guánica, on
our East, North and South coast, respectively. The CMBN sponsors a Seminar
and Workshop Series. About ten scientists are invited every year to deliver
seminars on their work or workshops on subjects of interest. During the last
year, speakers were from Puerto Rico and from the continental USA, Europe
and South America. The CMBN co-organizes the Puerto Rico Neuroscience
Conference. The CMBN is directed by Dr. José Gilberto Ortiz who is
helped by four officers and advised by an executive committee. An external
Advisory Board evaluates yearly the center's progress.
The members of the Advisory Board are:
Nilda Candelario, M.D. President, Universidad Central del Caribe
Osvaldo Rosario, Ph.D. Prof. of Chemistry UPR, Rio
Piedras
Jean de Vellis, Ph.D. Director, Mental Retardation Research Center,
UCLA
Philip G. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. Chief, Laboratory of Developmental
Neurobiology, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
